St Fachtna's Cathedral, Rosscarbery

Pilgrims and scholars came from near and far and gained for Ross the title "Ross Ailithir" - the wooded headland of the pilgrims. The first cathedral was built in the 12th century. The present building dates from 1612 and was extensively rebuilt and restored following the Rebellion of 1641. Major work was carried out at the end of the 19th century. There are many points of interest for the visitor and it is a place that constantly inspires locals and visitors alike with its connections with our Christian past and its sense of God's presence in the present.
